The Open Championship Update

Two rounds at The Open Championship have been completed in Troon, Scotland. Phil Mickleson opens with major championship tying record 63 and followed it up with a solid round of 69 to take a lead into the weekend. He is followed closely by Swede Henrik Stenson and major winners Zach Johnson, Keegan Bradley and Charl Schwartzel lurk close behind. The second round today was much more difficult with players teeing it up in the afternoon struggling the most. Pretty much everyone on top of the leaderboard had early tee times today. Through the first couple rounds, there are a couple of things I would like to point out.

First, the golf gods are real and they don’t want anyone to shoot anything lower than 63. There are over 25 players who have shorten a 63 in a major championship yet no one he reached that coveted 62 mark. Lefty was eight under par on Thursday but his birdie putt on the 18th hole for 62 lipped out. Phil thought he made it, everyone at the 18th hole thought he made it and everyone watching at home thought he made it. The ball was going dead center of the hole a foot out and all a sudden the golfing gods said “sike” and the ball when around and out. Phil said after the round it brought him close to tears. The golf gods do exist and they have put a curse on any player trying for 62.

Watch it here:

The second thing is how comfortable Mickelson looks. He made it look so easy both days, blitzing the field in the first round and playing his game and shooting under in the second. He is swinging so freely and I love it. He is not afraid of any shot and his short game is magical like always. He had his hat clipped with a binder clip, he walked around in sideways rain with no umbrella and rocked two gloves the whole day. It’s classic Lefty and it’s awesome.

Lastly, my picks for this week were pretty solid. All the players I highlighted this week made the 36 home cut. Let’s look how my top ten are fairing so far through 2 rounds:

1. Adam Scott: T-27th (E)

2. Dustin Johnson: T-15th (-2)

3. Jason Day: T-41st (+1)

4. Jordan Spieth: T-67th (+4)

5. Rory McIlroy: T-15th (-2)

6. Sergio Garcia: T-6th (-4)

7. Patrick Reed: T-15th (-2)

8. Martin Kaymer: T-11th (-3)

9. Andy Sullivan: T-41st (+1)

10. Zach Johnson:  5th (-5)
All in all, I am excited for the weekend. It looks like the weather should be typical Open weather with temperatures in the low 60’s with 10-15 mph winds and some scatters storms. I think the winner will be one of those in the top 5 currently. It’s Mickelson’s tournament to win and it is also his to lose. I look forward to him and Stenson battling it out and trying to hold of the multitude of major champions behind them.
