2016 Heisman Hopefuls

Last year we saw one of the more intriguing Heisman races is recent history. Derrick Henry ended up being crowned winner but Christian McCaffrey and Deshaun Watson finished close behind.

In particular, McCaffrey was regarded by many experts, analysts and fans as the best player in college football and some thought deserving of the Heisman trophy. After all, he did break Barry Sanders single season record for all-purpose yards and he put up one of the best seasons in college football history. The fact of the matter is though that Henry helped his team advance and eventually win the National Championship while putting up big numbers along the way.

You can’t take that away from Henry but I can’t help but think there ,just be a sour taste in Christian McCaffrey’s mouth. As we get nearer to the 2016 season, McCaffrey should be a front runner along with Clemson’s Deshaun Watson and LSU’s Leonard Fournette.

Favorites

Christian McCaffrey: The running back from Stanford looks to improve on last year’s second place finish. McCaffrey is the most dangerous running back in the country and can hurt opponents in many ways. No one had more big plays last year than McCaffrey did. He had 16 plays of 50+ yards last year when you factor in punt and kick returns. That is over one per game. I don’t think he can recreate 2015’s record setting performance but I surely believe he can come close.

2016 Projections: Rushing- 1,784 yards, 10 TD’s, Receiving- 658 yards, 6 TD’s

Deshaun Watson: Clemson’s star QB is coming off a third place finish in the 2015 Heisman vote and a loss in the National Championship game. But this year, Watson looks to be even better than last. The Tigers have weapons like Wayne Gallman, Jordan Leggett and Artavis Scott who all played key roles last year. They also welcome the return of one of the best receivers in CFB, Mike Williams, who was injured last year in the first game of the season. Watson should put up even better numbers than last year as the Tigers look to return to the championship game.

2016 Projections: Passing- 4,209 yards, 40 TD’s, 9 INT’s,  Rushing- 560 yards, 10 TD’s

Leonard Fournette: This running back gave us some electrifying runs early in the year but failed to continue his success as the season went on. The junior will look improve his consistency and prove to scouts he is a top talent.

2016 Projections: Rushing- 1,834 yards, 16 TD’s, Receiving- 259 yards, 2 TD’s

Other Favorites: Dalvin Cook (FSU), Baker Mayfield (OU), JT Barrett (OSU)

Darkhorses: DeShone Kizer (ND), Calvin Ridley (Bama), Josh Rosen (UCLA)

Longshots: Jabrill Peppers (U of M), Desmond King (Iowa), JuJu Smith-Schuster (USC)

Is anyone left off these lists that you think is deserving? Have comments on any of these players? Tell us what you think!
