Who Will Team USA Pick?

With the BMW Championship wrapping up yesterday, it is time for Team USA captain Davis Love III to pick 3 players to join this year’s Ryder Cup team. Love III will announce the three players this morning at 11 am. Two weeks ago, I highlighted the top 8 that made the team based on ranking. This past week, I ranked some of the potential picks after last week’s tournament in Boston. Now, I will give my opinion as to who I think should be picked along with a few players who might secure the final pick after next week’s Tour Championship. Here are the three players I would pick.

J.B. Holmes: Before this week, I had foolishly written off J.B. as one of these first three picks. After his strong showing and a T-4th finish this weekend, I think he is lock to make the team. He has never lost while dawning the red, white and blue as his lone Ryder Cup appearance was in 2008 at Valhalla, the U.S.A’s only win in the last 7 tries. He went 2-0-1 and seemed to be a crowd favorite. He would be my first pick and it would be a tragedy if Davis Love III left him off the team.

Justin Thomas: Many people are pushing for Daniel Burger to make the team. The 23 year old has put together quite the season including a top 10 this past weekend. There is just a feeling I have inside me though that says Berger doesn’t quite have what it takes, at least not yet. For that reason, I would choose a different 23 year-old. Thomas has been one of the best young players over the past season. He led Alabama to the national title in 2013 and also represented the USA in the Walker Cup. He picked up his first PGA Tour victory last fall in Malaysia and has notched five Top 5 finishes this season. Thomas hits the ball a mile and plays with fire. Plus, he is good friends with Spieth as well as ZJ and either of them would make for good partner in four ball or alternate shot.

Matt Kuchar: Kuch is fresh off bronze medal at the Olympic’s and just finished T-4th this weekend with J.B. Holmes at The BMW Championship. He is a model of consistency and has made 22 of 24 cuts this year including ten Top 10 finishes. Kuchar has been a part of the past three Ryder Cup teams and knows that feeling of defeat. I think with the Holmes and Thomas, you get a fresh perspective which is much needed but I also think that perspective of revenge and triumph from past defeats is crucial. Kuchar can use the feelings of the past three competitions to fuel him.

I believe these three are the best choices for the three spots available. I think all of them bring something to the table and could contribute in a possible USA victory. After DL3 makes his picks today, there will still be one spot left, with the pick coming after next week’s tournament. I think that spot should come down to three players, Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson and Daniel Berger. Fowler will not be playing however as he didn’t make the top 30 in the FedEx Cup so all he can do is watch and wait. I don’t think Fowler did enough this past week to earn a spot on this year’s team. He got outplayed when it counted most. I think it should come down to Bubba vs. Berger, best 72 hole score gets picked to join the Ryder Cup team. It couldn’t be simpler than that. But I have strange suspicion that Fowler is going to be picked. Fowler is loved by all the guys and I don’t know if Davis Love III has the balls to leave him off the team. If Rickie does indeed make the team, that would leave one more deserving candidate dueling it out with Bubba and Daniel next week which would make for quite the show. e

Your move Davis Love III, pick wisely.
